vintage-howard-johnsons-restaurant-diner-china
Vintage Howard Johnson's Restaurant Diner China - Prices Vary

Before the domination of fast food, "HoJo's" was a national landmark with more than 1500 locations scattered across the U.S. Founded by Howard Deering Johnson in 1925 with a single drugstore location in Quincy, Massachusetts, Johnson went on to fundamentally change many aspects of family travel hospitality during the Golden Age of the American Road Trip. Pioneering the clever use of now-common conventions like a separate children's menu, crayons and placemats for coloring and even the "doggie bag" for leftovers, the chain famously boasted that it served more meals outside the home than any organization except the U.S. Army.

Ever operating with foresight, Johnson was an early client of designer Dorothy May Kinnicutt Parish (known as Sister Parish), hiring the socialite to decorate the company's Somerville, New Jersey location. When the project was complete, HoJo's emerged with its signature turquoise blue. Parish told a reporter from The New York Times, “I dressed the waitresses in aqua, did the walls in aqua, I made the placemats in aqua. I guess I must have thought it was quite chic, but I haven’t done a thing in aqua since.” The rest, as they say, is design history.

Produced for Howard Johnson's by well-respected American china manufacturers including New York's Syracuse and Shenango companies, as well as Ohio's Walker China, these creamy ironstone serving pieces all bear the company's iconic 'Pieman' logo. Originating from a 1930 design by artist John Eagles Alcott, the graphic outlines characters from the nursery rhyme Simple Simon. Commissioned by Howard Deering Johnson himself, this sweet motif became the face of the brand, appearing on roof weathervanes, menus, glass and tableware, ashtrays, swizzle sticks, matchbooks and more for decades. One of the chain's most memorable logos, it showcases the Pieman, Simple Simon himself, and an adorable dog on the hunt for a tasty pastry.

Smart, durable and classic, these handsome pieces are full of easy charm. Whether you prefer to start your day with espresso, coffee, tea, yogurt or a hearty bowl of crunchy cereal, any of these nostalgic cups or bowls is sure to brighten the morning with a pinch of nostalgia and an extra splash of fun.

Each piece is one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale.
