Vintage Grey Spraymist Grapefruit Bowl

Vintage Grey Spraymist Grapefruit Bowl

$6.00

Produced by the now-defunct Sterling China Company, our Grapefruit Bowls have a warm grey spraymist decoration around their rim.  Traditionally used for serving half a grapefruit, these bowls are also ideal for cereal, a small salad or dessert.

6 1/4" diameter x 1 3/4" deep.  Microwave, Dishwasher and Oven Safe.  Limited quantities and subject to prior sale.

Rescued from a long-shuttered restaurant supply warehouse in Chicago, we are proud to offer a limited collection of unused American-made china.  Produced from the 1920s to the 1960s, these nostalgic pieces are about as honest and pure as dinnerware gets.  Clean, simple shapes decorated with the colors and patterns reminiscent of their era.  And above all, these pieces are of a quality that is near impossible to find today at any price.

In 1917 a pottery company named Sterling China Company was founded in Wellsville, Ohio. The company began making cups, bowls, and mugs then gradually added new items. As the company grew, it continued to add new body colors and decorations. Sterling China installed the first dipping machine for glazes for use by an American producer of restaurant china, replacing the old hand-dipped method.

By World War II, Sterling China was producing a tremendous amount of china. One source stated that Sterling China produced most of the dinnerware used by the United States armed forces during the war. The company's success continued, and by 1949 it was counted in the three top producers of hotel and restaurant china.  Sadly, changes in the industry during the second half of the 20th century forced Sterling China to close its doors in 2003.
