With the featured Coat of Arms adopted in 1922, Alpha Phi's motto 'Union, hand in hand' is supported by symbolism including a Roman lamp and the Ursa Major constellation. Founded in 1872 at Syracuse University during the first year female students were enrolled, 10 women banded together forming Alpha Phi when they were denied entry into men's fraternities. Founded in Troy, New York at  Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in 1864 during the Civil War as an engineering fraternity, Theta Xi's catchy motto 'Juncti Juvant' summarizes the fraternity's overarching mission 'United They Serve.'
