Vintage Silverplate Crescent Hotel Buxton Platter

Vintage Silverplate Crescent Hotel Buxton Platter

"I never saw anything so magnificent as the Crescent..."

Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.

Construction of The Crescent began in 1780 and was the centerpiece of the Fifth Duke of Devonshire’s plans to establish a fashionable Georgian spa town in Buxton. His inspiration was The Royal Crescent in Bath and it was built in a similar style: a grand, sweeping building that is built on an elegantly arching curve or crescent.

The Crescent is considered by many to be one of the most architecturally significant buildings in all of Britain. It faces St. Ann's Well, where warm thermal waters have flowed for thousands of years - waters that put Buxton on the map. Within The Crescent were two hotels, five lodging houses, a ground floor arcade of shops and a Grand Assembly Room which became the social center of 18th century Buxton.

The two hotels within The Crescent, were the St. Ann's Hotel and The Crescent Hotel and they are considered some of the earliest examples of hotels in Britain. (A hotel was a continental concept being introduced at the time, as a consequence of increased foreign travel. Unlike the coaching inns that it replaced, a hotel had a greater range of public rooms and guest services.)

The Crescent Hotel operated until 1935 when it was converted into a clinic as part of the Devonshire Royal Hospital. The St. Ann Hotel finally closed in 1989 and the entire building was closed in 1992 due to the many costly repairs needed to safely maintain the structure.

After many years languishing in disrepair, The Crescent building is currently undergoing a massive restoration and redevelopment project to include a 79-bedroom 5-star hotel, natural baths, a visitor center, a thermal mineral water spa and specialty shops.

From the original Crescent Hotel within the famed Buxton Crescent, we are pleased to offer this wonderful Vintage Silverplate Oval Platter. Bearing the Crescent Hotel name within a classic belt and buckle crest, this magnificent tray carries with it all the history of such a grand and significant building.
