Vintage Buffalo China Black Scroll Fruit Bowl

Vintage Buffalo China Black Scroll Fruit Bowl

$5.00

From the corner diner to the bustling bistro to your very own kitchen cupboard at home, restaurant china is as popular as ever. This American-made china has stood the test of time for good reason: it's sturdy, unpretentious, classic and true.

With a detailed scroll design around the rim, we're pleased to offer these handsome, limited stock Vintage Fruit Bowls produced by the now-defunct Buffalo China Company.

Known in the restaurant business as Monkey Dishes (who comes up with these names?!), they are that handy little dish used for a side of creamed spinach or a scoop of mashed potatoes or a serving of apple sauce. We love them for dips and salsas and a small scoop of ice cream when we're trying to be good! Regardless of their use, these classic little bowls will be a friendly addition to any kitchen!

Strictly limited quantities and subject to prior sale. Dishwasher, Microwave and Oven Safe. 5" in diameter.

Learn More About Our Vintage Restaurant Ware

Found in the shuttered warehouse of a third-generation, family-owned restaurant supply company in Chicago, we are proud to offer a limited collection of unused restaurant ware. Dating from the 1950s to the 1980s, these nostalgic, American-made pieces are about as honest as dinnerware gets. Clean, simple shapes decorated with the colors and patterns reminiscent of their era. And above all, these pieces are of a quality that is near impossible to find today at any price.

Learn More About Buffalo China

The Buffalo Pottery Company was established in Buffalo, New York, in 1901. It was an offshoot of the Larkin Soap Company, which was founded in 1875. John Larkin and his brother-in-law Elbert Hubbard conceived Buffalo Pottery to make dishes that could be purchased with certificates from Larkin Soap. In essence, the company was a gimmick to sell more soap!

Buffalo Pottery produced many different kinds of pottery for commercial use in hotels and railroad dining cars, as well as art pottery all of which is popular with collectors. In 2003, Buffalo Pottery emptied its kilns for the last time and closed the factory doors, thus ending about 380 jobs and 102 years of history.

Monkey Dish?!?

Legend has it that a monkey dish was the small dish that royalty would use to have their servants test their food for poison. They would put the food in that small dish for a monkey to try it.  If the monkey lived, then the royalty would proceed with their meal.
