Found at market in England, we are pleased to present this handsome Victorian Staffordshire Spaniel that had originally been purchased from the now-shuttered Oliver Sutton Antiques of London.

Produced in Staffordshire since the early 1700s, earthenware spaniels were essential to the Victorian home as one would proudly dress their mantel with a loyal spaniel standing guard. Entirely hand-painted, the stately Staffordshire spaniels were produced through the end of the 19th century and beloved to this day by many traditionalists and collectors. 

This very well-mannered spaniel is hand-painted with russet brown ears, tail and spots to his creamy white coat. With his regal nature and English charms, this lovely Victorian fixture is sure to make quite a statement in your home, sharing its warmth and antique aesthetic for time to come.

When the expanded creation of wealth from the Industrial Revolution prompted an explosion in demand for home décor items, Staffordshire potteries produced figurines such as this spaniel as quickly as they could to meet the demand of middle-class Victorians. The majority of these decorative, hand-painted figures were produced to imitate more expensive Meissen and Nymphenburg pieces produced on the continent for the opulent homes of the upper-class.

Experienced decorators in the factories lent their talents to higher-end porcelain pieces, while those classified as unskilled (typically women and children), painted these popular colorful figurines. Executed quickly and freely, the result is a folk-art quality that adds to their undeniable appeal - although it wasn't until the 20th century that serious collectors began to appreciate their charms.
