Victorian Silverplate "Self-Pouring" 3-Piece Tea Service

Victorian Silverplate "Self-Pouring" 3-Piece Tea Service

$550.00

A fascinating and rare find that exemplifies the inventive, industrial spirit found during the Victorian era. The Royle's Patent Self Pouring Teapot is a beautiful, utilitarian and relatively unknown marvel of antique engineering.

The teapot works by a pumping mechanism: place a tea cup below the elegantly curved spout; then simply raise the teapot's lid and lower it while covering the small hole at the top of the finial with your finger. This creates pressure within the teapot and forces tea up and out through the spout and into your cup. The design of the elegantly curved spout meant the teapot did not have to be lifted. A brilliant invention that eliminates the need to lift a heavy teapot!

Found at market in the north of England, this handsome 3-piece set was produced in Sheffield by James Dixon & Sons silversmiths and is in very good original antique condition. The pieces are all embellished with fluted details and lush Victorian ornamentation. The teapot's finial is bakelite.

Practical and novel to be sure, this wonderful set is sure to serve you well at your next tea party.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Tea pot measures 7" tall x 8 1/2" from spout to handle. Capacity of teapot is approximately 36 ounces. Sugar Bowl is 3 3/4" tall x 6 3/4" wide including side handles. Creamer is 4 1/4" tall x 4 3/4" from spout to handle.
