Learn More About Mont Saint-Michel

Approximately one half mile off the northwest coast of Normandy, a small island rises almost as a mirage out of the sea. Sitting atop the rocky islet is the 'Wonder of the West', a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael, and the village (population: 50) that grew up in the shadow of its great walls. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the abbey is a technical and artistic tour de force, having had to adapt to the problems posed by being constructed among powerful tides that move "as swiftly as a galloping horse".

Mont Saint-Michel and the bay within which it's located, were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979. It was listed with criteria such as cultural, historical, and architectural significance, as well as human-created and natural beauty.  It is one of France's most recognizable landmarks and more than 3 million people visit it each year.

Learn More About St. Clément

This delightful ceramic pitcher was made by the famed French faience pottery factory of St. Clément.  Founded in 1758 by Jacques Chambrette in the Lorraine region of France, St. Clément majolica was a favorite of Marie-Antoinette and gained a well-deserved worldwide reputation for beautiful wares.  It has been said that imitation is the highest form of flattery and the works of St. Clément have often been copied by other porcelain makers.
