Adorned in William Morris' beloved 1883 Strawberry Thief pattern and fastened with silky ribbon, this set of 10 Holiday Crackers is sure to be a memorable addition to any celebration! A traditional part of British Christmas festivities since Victorian times, Crackers first made their appearance in mid-1840s London. Fashioned by young wedding cake and sweets confectioner Tom Smith, who came upon the idea while on a trip to Paris where he witnessed the French holiday tradition of wrapping sugared almonds in twists of colored paper, Smith decided to enhance his twists with the inclusion of romantic message. Known as "Kiss Mottoes," the product had limited success apart from weddings until he devised a way for the cracker to make a big popping sound when pulled apart. 

Today, Crackers are typically used to adorn individual place settings and are opened prior to serving the first course at Christmas luncheon or dinner. Typically shared between two individuals with arms crossed, each holding an opposite end, the cracker is slowly pulled apart using steady pressure and a twisting motion to pry it open along one or (even better!) both perforations, activating the satisfying “cracker snap,” which produces a small bang. The tiny jolt reveals a hat, a motto (joke or riddle), a snap device to make the popping sound and a small gift or novelty item. Exuberant cries of "What did you get?" and "Tell me your joke!" make a colorful and exciting start to the festivities.
