For most of the year, they’re respectable members of mouse society. But once the October moon rises and the village pumpkins are lit, the Frightful Friends emerge.

Led by Witchy Winona, whose crooked hat and pumpkin-topped staff have earned her first place in the village costume contest three years running, this lively little cohort has assembled for its annual Halloween rounds. Ghostly Gus handles the haunting, Pitchfork Percy carries the devilish accessories, and Count Crumbula has spent weeks perfecting a Transylvanian accent that no one has yet had the heart to tell him is terrible. Pink Witch Penelope, meanwhile, considers herself the fashionable face of the operation and refuses to visit any haunted house involving actual cobwebs.

Their evening has been carefully planned: trick-or-treating at dusk, the annual parade around the village green, and a midnight feast of whatever survives the journey home in their pumpkin buckets. There is just one rule upon which everyone agrees—if anyone spots the village cat, they are immediately abandoning character.
