Vintage Sterling China Green Band Celery Tray

Vintage Sterling China Green Band Celery Tray

From the corner diner, to the bustling bistro, to your very own kitchen cupboard at home, restaurant china is as popular as ever. This American-made china has stood the test of time for good reason: it's sturdy, unpretentious, classic and true.

It may be hard to believe, but celery, whether cooked or raw, was more or less the avocado toast of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a standalone item on many menus and restaurants often brought a tray of celery sticks along with other relishes to the table, complimentary along with a basket of bread rolls.

Produced in the 1950s by the long-defunct Sterling China Company, this classic celery tray is decorated in the most familiar of all restaurant china patterns: Green Band. Multiple stripes of dark green are hand-applied around the white ironstone tray giving this sturdy piece its timeless, homey quality. Use this tray at your next gathering for crudités. Bring it to the table when serving corn on the cob or even a dressed-up hot dog. Use it bedside as a place to lay your glasses before you turn out the lights or on a dressing table to hold brushes and combs - wherever it is found, this handsome tray is sure to bring its nostalgic charms to your home today.

7.5"L x 3.75"W. Microwave, Dishwasher and Oven Safe. Limited quantities and subject to prior sale.

Learn More About Sterling China

In 1917 a pottery company named Sterling China Company was founded in Wellsville, Ohio. The company began making cups, bowls, and mugs then gradually added new items. As the company grew, it continued to add new body colors and decorations. Sterling China installed the first dipping machine for glazes for use by an American producer of restaurant china, replacing the old hand-dipped method.

By World War II, Sterling China was producing a tremendous amount of china. One source stated that Sterling China produced most of the dinnerware used by the United States armed forces during the war. The company's success continued, and by 1949 it was counted in the three top producers of hotel and restaurant china.  Sadly, changes in the industry during the second half of the 20th century forced Sterling China to close its doors in 2003.
