In the world of design, there's form, there's function...and then there's fun! This classic Ceramic Gluggle Jug possesses all three in spades!
Coming to us from the still-active Staffordshire kilns of Stoke-on-Trent potter Wade Ceramics, this whimsical fish pitcher silhouette has charmed and amused generations since it was first produced in the 1860s. Shaped like an open-mouthed fish, the jug has also been known as a "Glug Glug" and "Gurgle Jug" and originally had the tagline “a novelty which always attracts attention”. When liquid is poured at 3/4 full, it produces a gurgling sound, the result of an air-lock created in the hollow fishtail which then bubbles out.
The iconic Gluggle Jug makes a lively centerpiece for any occasion, as well as a versatile pitcher for water or cocktails or an impromputu vase. Still increasing in popularity, its status as an icon was reinforced in the late 1950s when a special pair of Gluggle jugs were produced for presentation to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on a visit to Dartmouth's Naval College.
Richly glazed in either vintage pink, deep cobalt blue or vibrant orange, these delightful jugs will be a storied addition to your home, sure to attract attention whether it is in use or on display.
