Antique French Barbotine Figural Jardinère

This exquisite Antique French Barbotine Figural Jardinère is a stunning find at market. Showcasing the masterful gros relief work of Impressionist painter and ceramicist Edouard Gilles, this colorful clog-shaped container dates to the 1870s, during the short years Gilles operated a Paris atelier. One of only a few studios of that period known for creating very fine large relief decorative barbotine, pieces from Gilles’ workshop are considered rare. His effusive style produced highly textured, three-dimensional applied florals, often hand-crafted by the master himself.

The artisanship required to finish one realistic flower, let alone a complete sculpture, was extremely involved and arduous to complete. Each painstaking step was executed by hand. First, Kaolin clay was manipulated to a paper thin fineness, then formed into distinct flowers, colored, applied to the vessel, glazed and fired. Due to the delicate nature of the applied clay, months of work could be ruined during the harsh firing process. This natural attrition combined with the fragility of the relief decoration, result in very few pieces from this highly collectible period of production remaining intact today.

Set against a dramatic black ground, the jewel-tones, pastel flowers, and earthy green leaves create a striking contrast to the fresh interior, glazed in a soft French blue. Understamped with the atelier's E.G. mark, this stunning vessel typifies the highly sought work of Gilles.
