Vintage Silverplate Hotel Deshler Coffee Pot

Vintage Silverplate Hotel Deshler Coffee Pot

$198.00

From the one of the grandest hotels in Columbus, Ohio, we are proud to offer a rare piece of magnificent silver from the Hotel Deshler.  When it opened on Aug. 24, 1916, it was one of the biggest social events in Columbus.  More than 500 guests attended what society writers reported as "a brilliant affair." The 400-room hotel was a $1.5 million structure and was one of the premier hotels in all of the Midwest. By the 1920s, the hotel expanded with the addition of two wings bringing the hotel's room count to 1,000.

The Deshler continued to operate throughout most of the 20th Century as one of Columbus’ leading hotels.  However as was the case with so many grand inner-city hotels, guest registries began to decline mid-century and eventually the hotel was closed.  Sadly in May of 1970, the Deshler met the fate of so many other hotels when the once-grand structure was demolished.

All that remains of the grand Hotel Deshler are fading memories and a few precious treasures that survived demolition. One such treasure is this lovely Vintage Silverplate Coffee Pot produced exclusively for the Hotel Deshler.  On the side of the pot is the hotel's elaborate winged griffin logo reminiscent of the Winged Lions of St. Marks in Venice. The pot was manufactured by the esteemed Reed and Barton silversmiths and is bottom stamped with the name of the hotel along with the year of manufacture: 1948.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In good vintage condition with wear that is commensurate with the pot's age. 7 1/2" x 5 1/8".

Learn More about Hotel Silver

Once found in Grand Hotels, chic cafés, elegant restaurants as well as luxury steamships and the dining cars of the great locomotives, vintage hotel silver beautifully evokes the Golden Age of Travel. Enduringly crafted using sturdy nickel silver as its base metal and coated with a thick plating of pure, gleaming silver, vintage hotel silver is unmistakeable for its simple, classic lines and its pleasing heft. Often crested with the name of the establishment, the pieces bear the gentle, lovely patina often referred to as a “butler’s finish”.

Produced by the great silversmiths here in the United States, as well as those in Britain and on the Continent, most hotel silver dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. Prized for its perfect blend of form and function, hotel silver was made to withstand the rigors of daily use. Highly collectible, vintage hotel silver is a wonderful addition to any home.

Evoking the days of elegant travel, there are many new ways that hotel silver can be enjoyed. A milk pitcher or sugar basin makes an elegant vase for flowers or fresh herbs on the kitchen counter. A collection of oval platters adds sparkle and depth in a hutch when not being called into service for a buffet or dinner party. A toast rack becomes the perfect way to display photographs, hold fingertip towels in a powder room or organize mail in the office. Mix and match cutlery brings a relaxed sophistication and elegance to any tablescape. Whatever the piece, vintage hotel silver is sure to stir memories not only of your own travels, but of exotic destinations and ports of call from parts unknown.
