Antique Stag Horn Handle Servers with Rests

Antique Stag Horn Handle Servers with Rests

$395.00

From a silver market in the north of England, we are thrilled to present this set of Victorian Silverplate Servers with their authentic stag horn handles. In their original fitted presentation case, this magnificent set includes a fish serving knife, a fish serving fork, a trident-style serving fork that would have been used for bread, (but is excellent for any meat or poultry) along with a pair of utensil rests to prevent a serving fork or knife from being placed directly on the tablecloth.

The gleaming silverplate blade of the fish knife is beautifully hand-engraved with lovely scrolling, leafy embellishments, while the fork is finished with a decorative cut-out surrounded by delicate leafy engravings.  The trident-style serving fork has a long twisted stem that connects the stag handle with its simple, three prong fork. The always practical utensil rests stand confidently on sparkling silverplated ball feet, bridged by handsome stag horn.

This exceptional set of stag horn and silverplate serving pieces was made by the esteemed silversmiths at James Deakin & Sons of Sheffield and are that rare combination of exquisite refinement and rustic, natural beauty. These lasting treasures will set the most inspired holiday table, adding rich sparkle and natural warmth.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Box measures 15" x 6.75"; Fish Knife measures 13.5" Fork measures 10.25" in length; Trident-style Serving Fork is 9.5" in length; Utensil Rests measure 4".

Learn More About Fish Cutlery

Specific cutlery for serving and eating fish evolved in the early 19th century in England. In 1838, a book of etiquette noted that "in first rate society, silver knives are now beginning to be used for fish: a very pleasing, as well as decided step in the progress of refinement." People of means no longer used steel knives and forks, as the steel was said to react with the acids in the fish sauces and taint the flavor of the food. Fish knives and forks were commonly called "Fish Eaters", while the serving implements were aptly called "Fish Servers".
