Antique "Spritzdekor" Ceramic Covered Lunch Box

The German word spritzdekor, refers to a spray ("spritz") design on ceramics most often produced in Germany, Czechoslovakia and Belgium during the 1920s and 30's. With motifs often echoing those of the Bauhaus design movement in Germany, Spritzdekor has a distinctively modern aesthetic that is seen now as a reaction to the romantic, fluid shapes of Art Nouveau.

During this same era, the humble open lunch pail gave way to delightful ceramic and stoneware lunchboxes which provided a durable, heat-retaining answer to the cold lunch, allowing factory workers, miners, craftsmen and school children to enjoy hearty, warm meals at noontime. Gradually succumbing to lighter and more sturdy metal alternatives, surviving stoneware lunchboxes like this attractive container are highly collectible for their unique craftsmanship and crisp designs.

Recently found at market in Paris, this charming Antique Spritzdekor Ceramic box is decorated in classic spritzdekor style with a cheerful palette of light blue and faded red. Juicy, ripe raspberries along with three and four-leaf clovers dance across the cream-covered front and back panels. Dramatic fluted curves sprayed an eye-catching raspberry red from the transition from the front, to the side, to the back.

With handsome metal fittings to its lid, hinge, fastener and handle (all in working condition) this oval box would make an extra festive biscuit box (cookie jar), coffee pod holder or stash for sweets, sure to bring its simple, modern charms to your stylish kitchen.
