Antique Silverplate Spoon Warmer

Found at market in the north of England, we adore the charm of this lovely Antique Silverplate Spoon Warmer and Spoon with its traditional compartment for hot water and decorative feet which elevate the piece to prevent heat damage to the surface below. Rarely available, spoon warmers were never part of mass production and remain highly sought after for their clever design and practical use.

Indispensable in drafty English homes, the spoon warmer was a Victorian darling protecting diners from food that might cool down too quickly. Whether a dish with rich, fatty gravy that could congeal unappealingly on its way to your plate or another such serious dining matter that could be solved with a warm spoon, warmers came to the rescue. Much like the large variety of serving dishes that had hot water compartments to maintain heat, these more petite warmers were filled with hot water in the kitchen and brought to the table along with serving spoons inserted in them to be kept warm until used.

Spoon warmers make even more sense when we remember how chilly and drafty British homes could be for much of the year - with most dining rooms having no central heat and only perhaps a fireplace for warmth. Households with servants urged their staff to hurry from kitchen to dining room so food could be served hot, or at least warm, on heated plates. Hot food was not only more appetizing, but proof of a well-run home. 

This striking warmer consists of a spoon shaped base embellished with a series of geometric and botanical motifs that encircle the outer surface. At center front an open medallion waits to be filled with your bespoke monogram. Produced by the long-shuttered Martin Hall & Co. of Sheffield, this glorious warmer with its ample spoon resting aloft the heated surface is sure to elevate buffet or table service at your next gathering to new heights.
