Antique Silverplate Cranston's Hotels of London Tray

Antique Silverplate Cranston's Hotels of London Tray

An exciting find at market in the north of England, this gleaming Antique Silverplate Tray produced for Cranston's Hotels of London is resplendent in beautiful details. In a classic oval shape covered with a majestic fern frond and floral motif that surrounds the outer perimeter of the grand surface, the tray's dazzling shine is reflected from every angle. Dancing around the graceful edge and along the convenient carrying handles, a bold gadroon border frames the delicate pattern.

A small chain with premises on Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury Street and Southampton Row, The Cranston London Hotels Co. Ltd. offered hotels in central locations boasting hot and cold water, electric fires, in-room post office telephones and even “modern mattresses.” Ranging in size from 150 to 300 rooms, each property was distinct and known by an individual identity: The Kenilworth, The Ivanhoe and The Waverley. These idyllic names and a logo replete with English imagery like oak leaves alongside a lion and shield, reinforced an image of comforting “Britishness” to middle-class travelers seeking quality and value.

Produced for Cranston's and bearing the bespoke 'CRANSTON'S HOTELS' moniker inside a flowing ribbon, this exceptional tray was produced by the talented and capable silvermakers at Albert Henry Thompson of Sheffield, England. Dating from the pre-war era, this impressive tray beautifully displays key hallmarks of the Arts and Crafts movement through elevating playful elements of nature as high design in place of more traditional moifs. Whether employed at tea time or displayed on the well-appointed bar or buffet, this magnificent tray is sure to serve you with all the elegance and style of a bygone era.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In excellent antique condition. 22" x 13.5".

Learn More about Hotel Silver

Once found in Grand Hotels, chic cafés, elegant restaurants as well as luxury steamships and the dining cars of the great locomotives, vintage hotel silver beautifully evokes the Golden Age of Travel. Enduringly crafted using sturdy nickel silver as its base metal and coated with a thick plating of pure, gleaming silver, vintage hotel silver is unmistakeable for its simple, classic lines and its pleasing heft. Often crested with the name of the establishment, the pieces bear the gentle, lovely patina often referred to as a “butler’s finish”.

Produced by the great silversmiths here in the United States, as well as those in Britain and on the Continent, most hotel silver dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. Prized for its perfect blend of form and function, hotel silver was made to withstand the rigors of daily use. Highly collectible, vintage hotel silver is a wonderful addition to any home.

Evoking the days of elegant travel, there are many new ways that hotel silver can be enjoyed. A milk pitcher or sugar basin makes an elegant vase for flowers or fresh herbs on the kitchen counter. A collection of oval platters adds sparkle and depth in a hutch when not being called into service for a buffet or dinner party. A toast rack becomes the perfect way to display photographs, hold fingertip towels in a powder room or organize mail in the office. Mix and match cutlery brings a relaxed sophistication and elegance to any tablescape. Whatever the piece, vintage hotel silver is sure to stir memories not only of your own travels, but of exotic destinations and ports of call from parts unknown.
