antique-silverplate-and-glass-sardine-box-4
Antique Silverplate and Glass Sardine Box

By the late 19th century, the British table had become a carefully orchestrated expression of gracious hospitality. Even the simplest delicacies were presented with thoughtful attention to form, and specialized serving pieces transformed everyday fare into an occasion. Among the most charming of these was the sardine box, designed to present preserved fish with elegance rather than serving them directly from the tin—a small but meaningful gesture in an age that prized refined table manners.

Crafted by the esteemed English metalworkers Hulkin & Heath, renowned for their innovative silver and electroplate designs and their celebrated collaborations with designer Dr. Christopher Dresser during the 1870s and 1880s, this handsome sardine box pairs a glass liner with an elegant silverplate frame and hinged lid. Delicate engraved decoration adorns the frame and cover, while a beautifully sculpted finial crowns the lid. Finely detailed ram's-head feet support the box, while handsome lion's-head mounts hold a pair of ring handles at either end.

Although created for serving sardines at luncheon, tea or the supper table, this versatile vessel is equally well suited today for butter, preserves, olives, pickled vegetables or other favorite accompaniments. Whether incorporated into a thoughtfully layered tablescape or displayed among a collection of English silverplate, it remains a delightful reminder of the elegant details so prized on Victorian and Edwardian tables.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale.
