Antique English Sardine Dish

Antique English Sardine Dish

$175.00

Found at market in northern England, we are delighted to offer this lovely Antique Hand-Painted Sardine Dish. Sardines became a popular food item during the late 19th century, often served with a soup course or as a complement to family tea time. Serving sardines from a tin would have been considered a breach of etiquette and special serving dishes would draw keen attention to the fact that this Victorian delicacy was being served and reflect well on a family's social status.

Expertly made of white, hard-glazed earthenware by the venerable Wood & Son potters of Stoke-on-Trent, England, the dish is lovingly hand-painted with peaceful scenes of sailboats floating on calm waters. The lid of this charming sardine dish is topped with a silvery mollusk shell as its finial. While the rim of both the lid and the attached liner are finished with a warm, sienna brown border, the gently scolloped edges are trimmed in gleaming silver glaze.

This wonderful serving piece promises to always keep your sardines, pickled vegetables or other accompaniments in style and at the ready.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Dish measures 4"H x 7 x 7.5".
