Antique Queen Victoria Dominion of Canada Plate

Antique Queen Victoria Dominion of Canada Plate

"Whereas the Provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick have expressed their Desire to be federally united into One Dominion under the Crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, with a Constitution similar in Principle to that of the United Kingdom..."

Preamble of the British North America Act (Canadian Constitution Act 1867)

Produced near the end of Queen Victoria's reign, this rare antique plate celebrates the special relationship between Great Britain and Canada. As the vast country of Canada was settled, it was at first under French rule and later, British. During the mid-1800s, there was much debate in Canada whether they should be called the Kingdom of Canada establishing their deep connection to the British monarchy. In the end, Dominion of Canada was chosen and in 1867 it became the country's official name.

Until the 1950s, the term Dominion of Canada was commonly used to identify the country. As Canada acquired political authority and autonomy from the United Kingdom, the federal government began using simply Canada on official documents. The move away from being referred to as a Dominion was formalized in 1982 with the passage of the Canada Act which refers only to Canada.

Although Queen Victoria herself never visited Canada, she did act as a unifying influence for the country's provinces and five of her nine children spent extended time there. Her name was given to numerous public buildings, streets, communities and physical features across Canada.

Decorated at center with an image of Queen Victoria surrounded by seven provincial coat of arms. Above the queen are two cherubs holding a banner declaring God Save our Noble Queen.

This lovely and rare plate will certainly be a beloved addition to your collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. 7 3/8".
