Antique Art Nouveau Silverplate Card Holder

Found at market, this exceptional Antique Art Nouveau Silver Holder and Stand was produced by the talented artisans of New England's prolific Wilcox Co. Founded in 1865 as Wilcox Brittania Co with showrooms in Meridan, Connecticut and New York City, the company was one of the original firms to become part of the International Silver Company in 1898. Highly regarded by America's growing and upwardly mobile middle class, Wilcox maintained creation of fine silver and holloware in its own factory until operations were halted in 1941 due to World War II metal shortages. The brand was ultimately acquired by Oneida in 1981.

Originally designed to hold an afternoon's cache of calling cards from those who were not fortunate enough to find the lady of the house 'at home,' this exquisite silverplate holder floats delicately atop graceful articulated feet that resemble elegant flourishes. The intricately crafted motif is repeated on the lower portion of the holder as well as the sides, culminating in a crown of swirls highlighted by a jaunty flower with star-shaped petals.

While calling cards have largely faded from fashion, the holder is perfectly sized to present an attractive box of matches, fine pens or petite bespoke memo pads. A magnificent vestige of the grace and style evinced by turn-of-the-century social customs, this rare stand is sure to become a treasured addition to any collection.
