Antique Majolica St. Clement Asparagus Plate

Antique Majolica St. Clement Asparagus Plate

$125.00

First appearing in 1851 at the Great Exhibition in London, Majolica ware is richly colored pottery with designs based on plant and animal motifs. By the time it was exhibited at the 1855 Paris World's Fair, it had taken the bourgeoisie of Europe and the Americas by storm. Many late 19th-century majolica designs had rustic motifs with backgrounds of basketry and were decorated with molded flowers, birds, fish and animals - nature inspired for sure.

Case in point, this lovely Antique Majolica Asparagus Plate. Found at market and coming to us from the early 1900s, this Majolica plate is gorgeous with its earthy aesthetic and lush detail. With its unique handpainted charms of pretty violet, pink, and sage green color, our Antique Majolica Asparagus Plate will delight for years to come. With a clever well for hollandaise or other tasty sauces, lovingly serve your every tender asparagus spear in elegant style.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In good vintage condition. 10" in diameter. Handwashing recommended.

Asparagus is a member of the lily-of-the-valley family and is unique in having no leaves, but rather delicate "photosynthetic" branches. Once known as sparrow grass, asparagus was not considered a food, but rather a cure for heart trouble, and toothaches. It was even supposed to prevent bee stings! Today we love it for its deliciously sweet, fresh flavor that perfectly captures the joys of early summer.
