Antique Limoges Fish Service For 8
Antique Limoges Fish Service For 8
$395.00
The tradition of serving fish upon plates adorned with aquatic scenes stretches back to antiquity—indeed, as early as Classical Greece, ceramics were painted with the very creatures they were meant to present. In France, with its rich culinary heritage and reverence for ritual at table, this custom evolved into the refined fish service: porcelain reserved especially for the piscine course.
Case in point: this exquisite antique Limoges Fish Service, comprised of eight plates and a generous serving platter. This graceful service comes to us from Latrille Frères, a French porcelain manufacturer active from 1899 to 1913. Each piece is delicately hand-decorated in soft, watery hues with finely detailed fish gliding through gentle currents, accompanied by flowering water plants and fern-like fronds. The painterly scenes feel almost suspended beneath the glaze—serene, luminous, and quietly alive.
The scalloped rims are washed in the palest blush pink and richly accented with gilded highlights, lending a warm glow and subtle opulence to the ensemble. The gold trim frames each aquatic vignette beautifully, adding just the right touch of sparkle for a celebratory fish course.
A large, grand service for un grand poisson!
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Plates in very good antique condition with minimal, discreet wear to the gold trim and transfer decorations. Please note a discreetly repaired bump on the edge of the platter which is present in photographs. Hand washing recommended. Plates are 9.5" in diameter; Platter is 23.75"L x 10"W x 2"H.
