Antique English Triple Swinging Bells

A curious relic from another age, this extraordinary Antique Triple Swinging Bell (also called a terret), found at market in England, is equal parts social history and colorful conversation piece. Fashioned from warm, beautifully aged brass, the bell frame is crowned by a dramatic plume of horsehair dyed in Union Jack colors that cascades around its trio of suspended bells.

Originally associated with horse-drawn travel, the addition of bells to horse tack added a cheerful jingle while helping announce the approach of horse and carriage along the road. In addition, this type of terret was often associated with the horses that once pulled narrow boats along England’s once extensive canal system.

Dating to circa 1900, these bells are the sort of antique we find irresistible—beautifully made and guaranteed to prompt questions. And really, those are often the very best finds.
