Antique Fruit & Dessert Service for 6

Antique Fruit & Dessert Service for 6

$425.00

The Victorian Era, named after England's Queen Victoria, lasted from the 1830's to the turn of the 20th century and was an era of abundance and beauty.  It was a time when every thing brought to the dinner table had its specific utensil, serving piece or means of presentation: from marrow spoons and sweetmeat baskets to nutmeg graters and grape shears.

Case in point, this elegant Victorian Fruit and Dessert Service for 6. Originally intended for use with a fruit or dessert course, this magnificent set is also ideal for appetizers, salads, a light lunch, even breakfast - any time the proportions of a dinner knife and fork are too large for the course or meal being served.  It is just the sort of set that will leave guests to secretly admire your poise, flair and unfailing attention to detail.

With elegant ivorine handles and lavishly decorative ferrules, this set was produced by the venerable Francis Howard Silversmiths of Sheffield, England. Exceptional in every detail, the silverplated blades of each knife are engraved with scrolling floral embellishments while the delicate tines of the forks were intended for dining on fresh fruit or delicious desserts in true Victorian style. Packed in its original, fitted presentation case with ruched silk lining, the knives are presented on a raised arc of gorgeous indigo blue velvet.

This magnificent set is truly one-of-a-kind and will be a beloved addition to any tableware or cutlery collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Box measures 12" x 9.25". Knives measure 7.5" in length; Forks 6.5".

Learn More About Ivorine

Ivorine is a name often given to celluloid. Celluloid was invented in 1862 and is generally regarded to be the first thermoplastic. It was useful for creating less costly jewellery, jewellery boxes, hair accessories and many items that would earlier have been manufactured from ivory, horn or other expensive animal products. It was often referred to as "Ivorine" or "French Ivory". It was also used for dressing table sets, dolls, picture frames, charms, hat pins, buttons, buckles, stringed instrument parts, fountain pens, cutlery handles and kitchen items.

Vintage and antique items made in celluloid are collectible today and increasingly rare in good condition. Celluloid is still used today for the production of table tennis balls and guitar picks.
