Antique French Auto-Velo Club Sign

Price: $995.00

This stunning hand-painted Antique French Auto-Velo Club Sign plaque with its original creamy white and soft rose enamelware finish was found at market outside Paris in September. Produced in sturdy steel and fused with durable porcelain enamel, this handsome marker would have been installed on a building or house exterior to mark the local chapter of the Pontarlier Velo and Cycle Club.

Beginning in the late 19th century, the history of early transportation clubs like this one mirrors the birth of modern mobility during a time in which France served as a global epicenter of innovation. Before cars arrived on the scene, cycling underwent a major transformation becoming the vehicle we recognize today with the addition of pedals to the velocipede by the Michaux brothers in 1861. Less than two decades later, French mechanics and manufacturers like Panhard, Levassor, and Peugeot led the world in petrol-powered vehicle development.

During this era, automobiles were temperamental, loud, and constantly breaking down, so they were often grouped together with bicycles as hobby vehicles for wealthy enthusiasts under a single "wheel" or "velo" club banner. Pontissaliens of the era, must have borne witness to many feats and curious vehicles!

Handpainted by a talented Peintre en Lettres (sign painter) named Habon Quinel, this charming sign reads:

CERCLE de L'AUTO-VELO PONTISSALIEN

Most known for the production of absinthe, an anise-flavored spirit distilled from the plant artemisia absinthium, otherwise known as green wormwood, it's fascinating to consider this additional aspect of the Pontarlier legacy.

A rare artifact with a spectacular aesthetic, the sign plaque's bold design, handsome shape and artful lettering conjure the image of a romantic village streetscape with all its limestone and cobbled pavé romance. Sure to impress with eternal charm and an intriguing provenance, this magnificent relic past which legions of Pontissaliens and magical vehicles have passed, promises to captivate the imagination wherever it is displayed.
