First appearing in 1851 at the Great Exhibition in London, majolica ware was an exciting addition to Victorian décor with its rich colors and inventive depictions of plant and animal motifs imagined in dimensional pottery. By the time majolica ware was exhibited four years later at Paris' 1855 World's Fair, it had taken both Europe and the Americas by storm. Fashionable consumers on both sides of the Atlantic fell in love with its whimsical and often pastoral designs, exuberant color palettes and fine detailing.
