Antique French Handpainted 'Lait' Carafe

French Country at its finest, this Antique French Handpainted 'Lait' Carafe is decorated with exquisite florals and majestic gilt, elevating a practical home object to a work of art. Crafted from creamy porcelain and still retaining its original diminutive lid and chain, containers in a condition this lovely are a rare find! Complete with a metal ring and carry handle, a container such as this would have been used to retain a useful quantity of milk for the household, poured from the open milking bucket to the carafe in the same manner as a milk bottle today. 

Awash with enthusiasm in a fresh, cheerful palette of periwinkle blue, rose, raspberry and bright greens, this sweet container is one of the most beautiful we have seen. Carefully protected in excellent condition for the last century, it miraculously survived the everyday hustle and bustle of daily use in a busy home.
