Featuring an early 20th-century gentleman in formal attire with a small tricolor ribbon on his lapel, the diminutive portrait is beautifully rendered in delicate detail. Presented beneath glass within a handsome burled wood frame, its warm gilt inner surround contrasts beautifully with the rich wood. Signed Léa Imbert Carré, this charming portrait is a handsome example of the miniature's enduring appeal.

Before photography made it possible to preserve a likeness with relative ease, miniature portraits offered an intimate way to keep the faces of those most beloved close at hand. Particularly treasured from the 18th through the 19th centuries, these tiny works of art required extraordinary precision from their painters, who captured personality and expression on a remarkably small scale. Often commissioned to commemorate family members or exchanged as deeply personal keepsakes, they remain poignant connections to lives otherwise lost to history.

Though the identity of this sitter has been lost to time, the portrait retains the deeply personal quality for which miniatures have long been treasured. Displayed upon a gallery wall, tucked among favorite objects, or given a place of honor on its own, it is a quietly compelling survivor of another era—and a beautiful reminder of our enduring desire to remember the faces we love.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale,.
