Antique French Barbotine Pitcher
Antique French Barbotine Pitcher
Found at market in Paris, we adore this handsome Antique French Barbotine Majolica Pitcher, with its richly colored glazes, delicately rendered neoclassical decoration and wonderfully romantic old-world charm.
This striking French earthenware pitcher is a beautiful example of barbotine, a decorative pottery tradition celebrated for its sculptural relief work and brilliant, colorful glazes. Against a softly patterned turquoise ground, raised portrait medallions depicting figures in classical-style profile are framed by elaborate scrollwork and leafy laurel wreaths. Warm olive and golden-green glazes highlight the richly textured ornament, while a handsome dark brown handle provides a striking contrast. A beautifully shaped pouring spout completes the graceful silhouette, but perhaps the most delightful surprise is the brilliant crimson glaze lining the interior.
The French term barbotine refers to liquid clay slip, but also came to describe a colorful tradition of decorative earthenware, often featuring richly glazed, molded relief designs. French ceramic manufacturers produced an extraordinary variety of imaginative and colorful wares, from exuberant floral designs to architectural ornament and classical imagery. Combining the rich glazing associated with majolica and the sculptural possibilities of molded earthenware, these decorative pieces brought an appealing sense of artistry to everyday household objects.
At once stately and romantic, this handsome pitcher is sure to make a charming and memorable addition to your home, whether displaying a cheerful gathering of freshly cut flowers in a protective liner or simply standing on its own. A special piece, it promises to serve as a vivid focal point in any setting, bringing a little of the color and character of old France into your home.
