Antique French Franc Plate

From a market just outside of Paris, we are thrilled to have found a small cache of charming Antique Franc Plates. Typically thought of as tip plates to leave a few centimes for the waiter, they were actually used as coasters that doubled as a bar tab.  For example, if you ordered a glass of wine that cost twenty-five francs, it would be brought with the 25 franc coaster.  If another drink was consumed, it would again be brought with the coaster indicating its price.  When it was time to settle the bill, the stack of coasters with their varying prices would be added up et voilà, that was your total!
