Antique English Ceramic & Silverplate Demi Biscuit Barrel
Antique English Ceramic & Silverplate Demi Biscuit Barrel

As demand for tea soared in 19th century Britain, so too did the demand for commercially produced biscuits to serve along with a quick cup of tea. Since biscuits were fragile by nature, a tin provided a modicum of protection with the additional benefit of being air-tight, keeping biscuits fresher for longer. A simple biscuit tin, however, was not suitable to bring to the table during tea time and thus, the decorative biscuit barrel was born.
At your service, this absolutely charming Antique English Ceramic and Silverplate Demi Biscuit Barrel, found at market in the north of England. With its detailed ceramic body glazed in an inspired palette that ranges from soft blush to cheerful rosy-pink, this lovely biscuit barrel has the distinction of being more diminutive than most barrels. Perfectly sized for tea for two, this charming barrel is beautifully hand-painted with sweet florals accented by a dimensional crosshatch pattern in a subtle golden hue.
Not to be outdone by its romantic exterior, the sparkling silverplated lid and handle with its surprise service feature and majestic finial elevates the petite stature of this elegant vessel. Manufactured from earthenware by Staffordshire potter William Wood & Co. at their Albert Street works, and fashioned with a clever opening mechanism known as the Antrobus Patent, first granted in 1896, the handle stands upright when the lid is closed and can be lowered to either side to open. In addition to raising the gleaming lid for hands-free cookie (or bon bon) access, the stately handle also allows the container to be transported and presented with elegance and ease.
Expertly crafted from one of Burslem's historic potteries at an exciting time in the development of teatime as a broader social custom, this exceptional find is sure to take pride of place on your table and become a beloved addition to your collection.
