Learn More About Simon Rosenau
Simon Rosenau was a renowned German Jewish silversmith who founded his business in Bavaria in the spa town of Bad Kissingen in 1862. His business flourished as he not only produced pieces for export to England and the United States, but he also supplied the Royal Bavarian Court. In addition, he maintained close business ties with the silver manufacturers in Hanau, Germany which largely worked in antique reproductions for the export market.
His son Hermann Simon Rosenau took over the business in 1890 and continued until closing its doors in 1932. During World War II, Hermann fled Germany to Paris, but tragically he was deported by the Nazis in 1943 and sent to Auschwitz.
Sadly, it is not uncommon to find beautiful silver pieces made by Jewish silversmiths of that era that have had their hallmarks removed.
