"In joy or sadness, flowers are our constant friends." ~ Okakura Kakuzo
Recently acquired, we are pleased to present this stunning Vintage Floral Figural from the prolific glassmakers at Ohio's Cambridge Glass. One of America's most esteemed glass houses, founded in 1873, the Cambridge Glass Company was known for both the elegance and wide variety of its designs.
The exquisite figure known as the "Draped Lady" (often called "Bashful Charlotte") makes a luxurious impression in bright clear glass, standing on a pedestal surrounded by small holes into which cut flower stems may be inserted to create a striking display. Although representing a woman, a floral holder of this style is most often called a “flower frog”—or more prosaically, a “flower arranger.” At a time when it was more de rigueur to cultivate flower varieties in the garden and bring them indoors for decoration and enjoyment, these flower frogs were part of everyday household equipment.
While eminently handy when employed for an impromptu display without immersing the arranger in a lower bowl, placing the "frog" within a shallow container of water expands both the versatility of the display and the longevity of the clipped blooms. The clear glass figure, with its ice-like sculptural angles, is shown to magnificent advantage when set within a simple silver cake basket, upon a crystal compote, or on any stand capable of holding a small amount of water to nourish the flowers.
For the avid gardener, flower lover, or glass collector, this graceful and refined figural arranger promises to become a much-reached-for accessory within your entertaining or tablescape repertoire. The perfect backdrop for arranging everything from a hand-picked posy to seasonal décor, we are confident this sculptural ornament, with its opulent form, would make an exquisite gift or addition to any home.
