Antique English Apothecary Brass Mortar and Pestle

Antique English Apothecary Brass Mortar and Pestle

$150.00

With roots that go back to the Stone Age, the mortar and pestle has miraculously remained relevant even to this day. Used in apothecaries to prepare medications and in kitchens of every culture to grind herbs and spices, a mortar and pestle's basic design has remained unchanged over the millennia.

A two-part tool, the mortar is the bowl-shaped part of the pair where the food (or medicine) is placed. The pestle is the blunt, typically club-shaped object used to grind the mortar's contents. Because they are used worldwide for various purposes, mortars and pestles are made from many materials and vary in shape, texture and size. The most common are made of stone, such as lava rock, ceramic and marble. Less common are wood and cast iron models.

Found at market in England and cast in solid, weighty brass, the perfectly curved pestle meets the gleaming, classically detailed mortar, making seasoning pastes, spice mixtures, and flavorful herb blends in the time-honored tradition of centuries!

This Antique Brass Mortar and Pestle is a true kitchen classic that has definitely stood the test of time.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Hand-wash only. Mortar measures 3.75"H x 4.75"D, Pestle measures 7" in length.
