Antique English Transferware Platter

A particularly lovely find from the markets of England, this Antique “Mikado” Transferware Platter captures the late 19th-century fascination with the art and design of Japan. Rendered in delicate inky blue-black against a warm ivory ground, its wonderfully detailed decoration unfolds across the platter in a series of charming vignettes, from figures gathered beneath a parasol to graceful birds, flowering branches, and fancifully patterned fans.

During the second half of the 19th century, the opening of Japan to Western trade sparked an extraordinary enthusiasm for Japanese art and design throughout Europe. Known as Japonisme, this influence transformed the decorative arts, inspiring designers to embrace asymmetry, natural motifs, flattened perspectives, and imagery drawn—sometimes rather imaginatively—from Japanese life and culture. English potteries eagerly embraced the fashion, producing richly decorated wares that brought this exotic new aesthetic into Victorian homes.

This handsome platter is a wonderful example of that tradition. Its softly scalloped edge frames an intentionally asymmetrical composition, while the restrained monochromatic palette allows the extraordinary detail of the transfer-printed decoration to shine.
