Antique Pewter Mounted Wedgwood Black Basalt Jug

Price: $225.00

Elegant in its restraint yet wonderfully rich in detail, this Antique Wedgwood Black Basalt & Pewter Jug is a striking example of the neoclassical style that became synonymous with one of England’s most celebrated potteries. Developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 18th century, black basalt is a finely grained, unglazed stoneware prized for its deep matte surface and remarkable ability to capture crisp relief decoration.

Here, Wedgwood’s distinctive black body provides a dramatic backdrop for beautifully rendered classical ornament. A trailing border of grapevines, leaves and abundant fruit encircles the upper portion of the jug, while below, graceful figures stand in a scene inspired by the art and mythology of the ancient world. Even the substantial handle receives special attention, its gently twisted form adding texture to the otherwise stately silhouette.

Crowning the jug is a wonderfully patinated hinged lid mount. Press the pebble-smooth pale button with your thumb, and the hinged lid raises just enough to allow a tidy pour. The softly gleaming metal makes a particularly handsome counterpoint to the velvety black basalt below, while adding the practical finishing touch to a vessel originally intended for service at the table.

Inspired by the ceramics of classical antiquity yet unmistakably Wedgwood, this handsome jug beautifully marries artistry and utility. Whether admired for its sculptural presence, its fascinating combination of materials or its connection to one of England’s great ceramic traditions, it makes a quietly commanding addition to any collection or display.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Measures 3 3/8"D x 4 5/8" W (includes handle) x 5 1/2"H. In very good antique condition.
