Before modern medicines arrived neatly packaged from pharmaceutical manufacturers, the neighborhood apothecary was part chemist and part craftsman, carefully measuring and compounding ingredients to create remedies prescribed for individual patients. Rows of labeled glass bottles lined pharmacy shelves, keeping the powders, extracts, tinctures and other preparations of the trade close at hand. From Camphora to Tinctura Valerianae, the wonderfully evocative labels preserved on these examples offer a glimpse into that bygone world.

Beautifully utilitarian, the bottles' simple forms are elevated by their aged cream-and-gold labels, bold black lettering and, in some cases, beautifully fitted ground-glass stoppers. The variations in size, shape and patina give each its own distinctive character and make them particularly striking gathered together.

A handsome bit of medical history with plenty of graphic appeal, each of these Antique Apothecary Bottles makes a wonderfully unusual decorative object on its own—and an especially compelling display when collected in a grouping.
