Antique English Victorian Silverplate & Crystal Cruet Set
Antique English Victorian Silverplate & Crystal Cruet Set
Nestled into a stately oak stand perched on four ball feet, this practical and elegant Antique English Victorian Oak & Crystal Cruet Set includes six sparkling, heavy cut-crystal cruets. The two tallest casters are topped by silverplated lids embellished with diminutive shaker holes in the shape of tiny stars surrounding a graceful finial bead. Nearby, a plump, shapely pot originally intended for mustard rests in the center. Ideal for keeping favored condiments at the ready like chili crisp, sambal or even jam, the jar's hinged lid includes a small notch to accommodate the placement of a small serving spoon.
In a neat row behind the three lidded vessels rests a grouping of traditional cruet bottles with matching stoppers. Adorned with a cut crosshatch pattern that enhances the sparkle and shimmer of the gleaming glass in any light, the bottles would have been utilized for an assortment of vinegars, oils and savory sauces common to the era. The rich oak base which holds the six pieces is framed with a style of plated metal embellishment that reflects the formal, stately aesthetic for which the Victorian era has long been celebrated. With a grand central carry handle that rises from the lower base and ensures secure transport to the table, cruet sets were a standard fixture at every table, gentleman's club and dining establishment.
Complete with an applied shield medallion able to accommodate a bespoke monogram and dating from the mid-Victorian period, this is one of the earliest sets we have acquired over the past several years. A happy discovery at auction in the north of England, we are confident this regal Cruet & Caster Set will bring a refined grace and elegance to every occasion.
