"The Palace Beautiful"

Opening its doors in 1912, the Hotel Multnomah was built with 700 rooms - making it the largest hotel in the entire Pacific Northwest. (It would remain the largest hotel in Portland until 1961!) A case could be made that the Multnomah is the most important hotel in Portland history and for generations, it has been the gathering place for visitors and locals alike.

Throughout the years, many famous people have rested there. In the lobby is a list of notable guests, including every American president from Teddy Roosevelt to Richard Nixon, as well as Bing Crosby, Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, Rudolph Valentino, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Benny and Elvis Presley. Maybe the most notable guest was actual royalty when in 1926 Queen Marie of Romania held a grand reception at the hotel.

The hotel sadly closed its doors in 1963 and two years later would house various government offices. In 1995 it was purchased and returned to hotel service as the Embassy Suites Portland.

Produced in 1927 by the International Silver Company exclusively for the Hotel Multnomah, this classic Vintage Silverplate Bud Vase is stamped on its side with the hotel's name and intertwined HM crest.

With its pedigreed past and a "Butler's Finish" patina that only comes from decades of use and hand-polishing, this handsome vase is a gleaming souvenir of Portland's most historic hotel. It is certain to provide elegant service in your home much as it did in the storied Hotel Multnomah.

Strictly limited quantities (at listing, a total of 2 vases are available) and subject to prior sale. In good vintage condition with the patina and wear commensurate with its age. 5" in height.

Learn More about Hotel Silver

Once found in Grand Hotels, chic cafés, elegant restaurants as well as luxury steamships and the dining cars of the great locomotives, vintage hotel silver beautifully evokes the Golden Age of Travel. Enduringly crafted using sturdy nickel silver as its base metal and coated with a thick plating of pure, gleaming silver, vintage hotel silver is unmistakeable for its simple, classic lines and its pleasing heft. Often crested with the name of the establishment, the pieces bear the gentle, lovely patina often referred to as a “butler’s finish”.

Produced by the great silversmiths here in the United States, as well as those in Britain and on the Continent, most hotel silver dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. Prized for its perfect blend of form and function, hotel silver was made to withstand the rigors of daily use. Highly collectible, vintage hotel silver is a wonderful addition to any home.

Evoking the days of elegant travel, there are many new ways that hotel silver can be enjoyed. A milk pitcher or sugar basin makes an elegant vase for flowers or fresh herbs on the kitchen counter. A collection of oval platters adds sparkle and depth in a hutch when not being called into service for a buffet or dinner party. A toast rack becomes the perfect way to display photographs, hold fingertip towels in a powder room or organize mail in the office. Mix and match cutlery brings a relaxed sophistication and elegance to any tablescape. Whatever the piece, vintage hotel silver is sure to stir memories not only of your own travels, but of exotic destinations and ports of call from parts unknown.
