Vintage Silverplate English Asparagus Tongs

From the silver markets in England, we are pleased to offer these handsome yet utilitarian Vintage Silverplate Asparagus Tongs. In a sleek shape, ideal for diners to elegantly grip each tender spear, this style of tongs was first introduced (not surprisingly) during the Victorian era when diners would often be required to engage with a staggering amount of flatware and cutlery for the simplest of dinners. 

In vogue since ancient times, asparagus was first cultivated in Egypt and Italy. Later enjoyed in France and other parts of Europe, it was considered a delicacy often served at royal courts or reserved for special guests. To elevate the status of these humble stalks, elaborate customs, utensils and table manners were employed to demonstrate one's dining savvy in consuming this most sophisticated of vegetables. 

While nearly similar in design, we are thrilled to have discovered not one, but two styles of individual tongs at market. Both crafted by English silversmiths from gleaming silverplate, there is a subtle design difference on the lower tip of the spear holder with one style cast with a slightly extended round end to cover a bit more of the asparagus spear itself. The tongs shown in this style were produced for esteemed London department store, Harrods.
