Antique Aesthetic Movement Stork and Ship Pitcher

Antique Aesthetic Movement Stork and Ship Pitcher

$195.00

From the markets of Paris, we were immediately smitten with this charming antique pitcher in the aesthetic movement style. A style known to borrow and combine a wide variety of design elements from other periods and cultures all in the name of beauty, this Vintage Stork and Ship Pitcher is a particularly beautiful example of the movement.

With contrasting textures, a geometric, linear form and Japanese-inspired design, the pitcher features a stylistic stork in flight over a sailing ship, with a small pagoda design added separately at the bottom third of the pitcher.

Richly glazed with brown, cobalt, lavender and green, this striking pitcher is a truly one-of-a-kind treasure from the markets of Paris.

One-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Measures 7 1/2"H x 7"W.

Learn More About the Aesthetic Movement

The mid-19th century Aesthetic Movement was just that - a movement away from the fussy and conservative traditions of High Victorian sensibility and towards a desire to create "art for art's sake". A desire which extended beyond fine art to also include architecture, fashion, furniture, interior design and decorative arts.

The Aesthetic Movement was relatively brief, lasting only 25 - 30 years, but acted as a transitional bridge to the Arts & Crafts movement and eventually 20th century modern art.

Learn More About Majolica

First appearing in 1851 at the Great Exhibition in London, Majolica refers to the richly colored and imaginative pottery that boomed during the Victorian era. By the time it was exhibited at the 1855 Paris World's Fair, it had taken Europe and the Americas by storm, even gaining the approval of Queen Victoria herself!

While Majolica took on many whimsical and outlandish forms during its time in vogue, most designs were based on plant and animal motifs whose bright colors and textures brought a certain lighthearted charm to the rich but often dark and heavy Victorian decor. The nature-inspired designs were particularly popular among the urban-dwelling middle class, as Majolica was an affordable way to create an impressive decor and bring pastoral beauty into the home.
