Antique Majolica Wall Tile

Antique Majolica Wall Tile

$250.00

First appearing in 1851 at the Great Exhibition in London, Majolica ware is richly colored pottery with designs based on plant and animal motifs. By the time it was exhibited at the 1855 Paris World's Fair, it had taken the bourgeoisie of Europe and the Americas by storm. Many late 19th-century majolica designs had rustic motifs with backgrounds of basketry and were decorated with molded flowers, birds, fish and animals - nature inspired for sure.

Case in point, this magnificent Antique Majolica Wall Tile produced in Stoke-on-Trent, England in the late 1800s by The Campbell Brick and Tile Company. The design of the tile is described as 'inlaid' or 'encaustic', meaning the design is inlaid into the body of the tile. Tiles such as this were produced for "interior and exterior decoration of churches, chapels, schools, municipal buildings, and residences", often found in hearths and fireplaces.

With its unique whimsical details and richly hand-painted glazes, it will delight for years to come with vibrant tones of dark green, rich brown, gold, pink and soft watery blue. With a delightful scene of a chirping bird perched on a flowering thorny branch, this antique piece is truly museum-worthy. A storied piece for sure, this lovely find will become a favored addition to any Majolica collection, charming with its rich yet soft colors.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition with a chip to the lower left corner as shown in the alternate images. H: 8.125" x  W: 8.125" x D: 1".
