From an artisanal workshop in Morocco, we've fallen under the spell of these dreamy marbleized bowls. Organic swirls of color transform the outer surface of the bowl, mimicking the free-form patterns of marble and making each piece completely unique. The interior of the bowl is finished with a crystal clear glaze, allowing the natural russet color of the Moroccan clay to shine through.

In three practical sizes and three captivating color palettes, these distinctive hand-formed bowls will make a stylish addition to your tableware collection. The small bowls are perfect on a charcuterie or cheese board filled with confit, salted nuts or olives, or on the table as handy bowls for condiments and seasonings. The medium bowls are the ones we grab in the morning for yogurt and fruit or later in the day for a small snack, while the larger classic café au lait size bowl takes us back to homey breakfasts in France.

With a nod to their French cultural heritage, these handsome bowls display their gorgeous swirls of dynamic black glaze against a creamy white background. They represent authentic Moroccan artisanship and will bring a storied taste of North Africa to your table.

Please note: due to the one-of-a-kind nature of the marbleized glazing and the variation of the Moroccan clay colors, the shades of brown on the interior and the marbling patterns on the exterior will vary as shown. Small Bowls measure 2"H x 4"D; Medium Bowls are 2.5"H x 4.75"D; Large Bowls are 3.25"H x 5.25"D. Dishwasher and Microwave Safe. Not Oven Safe.

Learn More About Marbling

The ancient technique of marbling has an extensive history and is found in painting, paper-craft, textiles, and ceramics.

Inspired by the organic color variations and veining of actual marble, paper marbling began in Japan around the 10th century in the form of Suminagashi, or “floating ink”. Artists would add drops of black and indigo blue ink to water, the blow gently on the surface to create the marbling pattern. Paper was laid on top to imprint the pattern and left to dry.

Later, in the 15th century, Turkey and Persia created their form of marbling called Ebru or “cloud art”. Their methodology consisted of oil paints and gouaches instead of inks. To keep the heavier paints from sinking, a thickening agent called "size" was added to the water, which allowed the paints to stay on the surface and gave the artist more control in creating patterns. Once the paint was settled on the water surface, a feather, comb or stylus was used to created intricate patterns that would then be transferred to paper.

Marbling paper finally appeared in Europe during the 17th century when travelers to the Middle East collected the highly stylized papers and bound them into alba amicorum, also knowns as “books of friendship” - the Renaissance version of an autograph book. As popularity grew for marbled paper, Renaissance scientists began publishing accounts of marblers’ techniques and tools which was widely disseminated throughout the rest of Europe.

It was during this paper marble craze is when marbling first begins to appear on ceramic vessels in Europe. Marbling ceramics is achieved in three distinct methods: as a clay body (using clays of different colors in a single piece), through slip decoration (using liquid clay in various shades to create a marbled effect), or through glazing (drizzling different colored glazes together on a piece and allowing them to flow together).
