Vintage French Majolica Calvados Set

Vintage French Majolica Calvados Set

$250.00

Found at market in France, a Vintage Majolica Set designed to serve Calvados, French eau de vie de cidre (water of life, cider brandy), distilled from specially grown apples, selected from over 200 named varieties. Extensive proprietary blending of up to 100 apple varieties is undertaken with equal zest by illustrious and humble producers alike, artfully combining classifications of apples in three broad taste profiles - sweet, tart and bitter.

The raw fruit is harvested and pressed into a juice that is fermented into a dry cider, then distilled into a potent eau de vie. After two years of aging in oak casks, the liquid gold can first be sold as Calvados. Longer aging produces a smoother liquor and expert producers continue the aging process for several years.

A beloved liqueur for sure, it was the inspiration for this French Majolica Calvados Set. With a charming apple motif, this set displays all the most delightful hallmarks of majolica - playful shapes, an earthy aesthetic, and clever details. With gleaming gold highlights, this charming set includes 8 little drinking cups, and, of course, the pitcher in the form of a ripe apple. Hand-painted with soft colors and great articulation, this French Majolica Calvados Set is sure to enhance your Calvados cider brandy service in a most elevated fashion for years to come.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Pitcher measures 5.5" x 5.5", 8 cups measure 1.25H" x 2.5". In very good vintage condition.

Learn More About Majolica

First appearing in 1851 at the Great Exhibition in London, Majolica refers to the richly colored and imaginative pottery that boomed during the Victorian era. By the time it was exhibited at the 1855 Paris World's Fair, it had taken Europe and the Americas by storm, even gaining the approval of Queen Victoria herself!

While Majolica took on many whimsical and outlandish forms during its time in vogue, most designs were based on plant and animal motifs whose bright colors and textures brought a certain lighthearted charm to the rich but often dark and heavy Victorian decor. The nature-inspired designs were particularly popular among the urban-dwelling middle class, as Majolica was an affordable way to create an impressive decor and bring pastoral beauty into the home.
