Antique Mother of Pearl Hors d'Oeuvres Knives - Set of 6

Antique Mother of Pearl Hors d'Oeuvres Knives - Set of 6

$125.00

The Victorian era, named after England's Queen Victoria, lasted from the 1830's to the turn of the 20th century and was an era of abundance and beauty. Although the lush aesthetic of the era was born in England, it found its way very quickly around the world including to this side of the Atlantic.  Case in point: these elegant Hors d'Oeuvres Knives produced by the long-shuttered Landers, Frary & Clark Company of New Britain, Connecticut.

The handles are in lustrous mother-of-pearl, with sterling silver ferrules in a decorative floral design and pointed blades crafted in gleaming silverplated nickel silver.

Whether for an afternoon tea, a fruit or cheese course, a charcuterie board or any elevated appetizer, we are certain this elegant set of 6 knives will be a wonderful addition to your serveware collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Circa 1900. Knives measure 6 1/8" in length.

Learn More About Landers, Frary & Clark

Simply put, Americans kept house with Landers, Frary & Clark!

From its beginning in 1862, Landers, Frary & Clark (LF&C) manufactured products to  make life easier for the American housewife. Food scales, coffee grinders, cake mixers, bread makers, coffee pots and percolators along with tableware of every description were all in production before the 19th century turned to the 20th. In 1866, LF&C launched a new division called Ætna Works which produced high-end, highly decorative cutlery capturing the Victorian aesthetic that was sweeping the globe.

With the advent of electricity at the beginning of the 20th century, LF&C realized the potential and put into production an electric percolator, iron, toaster and coffee urn. At the 1904 World's Fair, LF&C won the gold medal for their Universal Bread Maker. That win, along with the popularity of their Universal Food Chopper and Coffee Percolator, helped establish Landers, Frary & Clark as a leader in the American housewares industry.

As electricity found its way into more homes across the country, LF&C developed an entire line of electric products including vacuum cleaners, electric ranges, washing machines, blenders, electric mixers and electric blankets (to name a few) which, along with their non-electric items, were sold all over the world.

In the 1960s, as the economics of the housewares industry and domestic manufacturing changed, the cutlery division of LF&C was closed and the small electrics division was sold to General Electric.
