It's cocktail time! Cocktail time! Make it to the Ritz at cocktail time!
See the gin attack the French vermouth..."
~ Cole Porter, 1922
Even though the first anecdotal written mention of "cocktail" as a mixed alcoholic drink appeared in America in 1806, it was not until Prohibition was lifted in 1933 that the glamorous mid-century era of the cocktail was born. Meanwhile, across the pond, cocktail culture began to flourish a decade earlier. The lively post WWI roaring 20s brought this novel and daring pre-dinner ritual into even the most stately of homes.
Enter this exquisite Antique English Silverplate and Engraved Crystal Cocktail Shaker with its lovely crystal tapering cylindrical body embellished by finely textured and engraved glass that ensures a firm grip while shaking or swirling. Not to be outshone by the sparkling crystal with its grapevine encircling the perimeter, the silverplate neck and cap gleam with refined elegance. Complete with its original silver mount, integrated strainer and push fit cork stopper, the lower ring of the cap is sidestamped with the mark of Birmingham silversmith Hukin & Heath.
Formed in 1855 as a partnership between silversmiths Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath, the company registered its first mark in 1879 following establishment of several showrooms in London. It was during this same period the partners entered into collaboration with notable British designer and design theorist, Dr. Christopher Dresser - recognized as one of the key figures in the Art Nouveau style movement. Crafted by an influential firm with great attention to every design detail, this extraordinary shaker is sure to impress as a gift or at your next gathering as you fashion and serve favorite libations with style and panache.
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Please note, the lid and top to the shaker should be held in place while shaking. 9”H x 4" in diameter.
