From the beloved potters of Aller Vale in Torquay, England, we are pleased to present this charming antique jug. Dating from the early 1900s, the jug is hand-painted in the beloved "Scandy" pattern with free form stylized flowers and charming scroll and dot embellishments. Referred to as "motto ware", the jug is hand-lettered with the following verse: "Freely Drink and Quench Your Thirst. Here Drank the Pilgrim Father's First".

In very good antique condition, this charming jug is sure to be a delightful addition to your home.

Aller Vale's history goes back to 1865 when the Torquay pottery company made simple, utilitarian kitchenware using the famed red clay of the region. The pottery company's name was originally J Phillips & Co, named after its founder, John Phillips. After the original factory was damaged by fire in the 1880s, John Phillips reopened his business with a new name, the Aller Vale Art Pottery and began producing more decorative ware.

In the last decade of the nineteenth century this artisanal pottery developed a much broader following when Queen Victoria's daughter Louise purchased some pieces and paid a visit to the pottery. Other members of the British Royal Family also became customers including Queen Alexandra, the wife of King Edward VII. Given its Royal patronage, Aller Vale Pottery was stocked by Liberty & Co. of London which introduced it to well-heeled customers from across the United Kingdom and around the world. 

Although the Great Depression and two World Wars took its toll, Aller Vale continued to produce pottery until 1962 when it closed its doors forever.
