A lovely discovery at auction in the north of England, this Vintage Silverplate HK and Shanghai Hotel Covered Dish features all the lovely hallmarks that make hotel silver so prized today: bold, streamlined design; a lovely, classic silverwork motif; clear production marks and an interesting provenance. Crafted by the venerable Elkington Silversmiths and stamped with the date code of its year of manufacture,1931, this magnificent serving dish with its handsome dome began life at one of HK (HongKong) and Shanghai's luxury hotel properties.
Incorporated in 1866, HK and Shaghai opened the area's first luxury hotel modeled after the grand hotels of London - The Hongkong Hotel. With its grand ballroom and sumptuous hospitality, the hotel was a star property for the growing company until its demise in the 1920s due to fire. Today the company continues to operate Peninsula Hotel properties across the globe.
